Art or Decor? Why the Difference Matters and What Exactly is the Difference Between Fine Art and Wall Decor?
When you walk into a beautifully designed room, what catches your eye first? The furniture? The layout? Or is it the art on the walls that gives the space its soul?
Today, more people are curating their homes with intention. But there’s a significant difference between simply buying wall decor and investing in real art. Knowing the difference is not just about aesthetics… it’s about connection, meaning, and long-term value.
Here is something most people do not know about me. When I was in art school and looking for work to have some extra spending money and support myself, I saw an ad in the paper advertising a job selling art.
I was like…
HELL YEAH!!! this could be fun.
Well I showed up for the meeting to find out I would be selling framed wall decor, or nicely designed posters. Most of the “art” was rubbish however a few pieces seemed cool.
Keep in mind I was only a few years into college so I may have been 21 or 22. I had no design sense really and didn’t know how to pull a room together with the design and furniture. I was purely about function. I think I lived in a studio apartment at the time.
Anyhow, I grabbed a handful of framed “art” (wall decor) and loaded up my car. Then I was given a script and told to go door-to-door in certain neighborhoods and start selling art. Ha!
I was a door-to-door art salesman and I SUCKED at it.
To be fair it was partly because my heart wasn’t in it. The posters although framed were just okay and I wasn’t confident in sales nor did I understand that anyone can learn sales but ya need to put in the time and find your style.
Anyhow, I sold to a few of my friends and I bought an Ansel Adams reproduction for myself. Yeah, I may have sold 3-4 pieces before I hung it up. I still have that piece today though and although the glass has broken, it sits in my art studio some 32 years later.
It has hung in multiple apartments and townhomes over the years. It was a great space filler and in my youth a way to look more sophisticated. As an adult typing this makes me laugh. However, it filled a certain level of requirement in my life.
The thing is once I started living with women (girlfriends and now my wife) we started moving to more (truly) sophisticated and well planned art (well mostly decor).
Today though I am hanging more ART. Real hand crafted art mostly my own, but we do own some other artist’s art. The difference is crazy. Art brings an energy and a sense of life AND a story to the space.
What Is Wall Decor?
Wall decor typically refers to mass-produced prints, canvases, or objects that are designed to complement interior design trends. They’re often color-matched to a sofa, chosen by size, and purchased at a home goods store, from a door-to-door salesman, or online with ease.
It’s not that wall decor doesn’t serve a purpose… it does. It can quickly pull a room together, fill blank walls, and create a coordinated look. But the experience ends there. Wall decor is made to fit in. It rarely makes you feel anything beyond “this looks nice.”
What Is Fine Art?
Fine Art, on the other hand, is something entirely different. It’s a visual experience, a conversation, and often, an invitation to pause. Real art carries the energy of the artist. You can feel it in every brushstroke, especially in styles like modern impressionism, where the loose gestures, layered colors, and emotional expression create a sense of movement and presence.
When you buy art, you’re not just filling a wall, you’re welcoming a story, a soul, and a living piece of creativity into your space.
As I am finding my footing on my own artistic journey one of my most popular styles right now is the modern impressionistic style. The thing I find interesting is my journey has brought me back to studying art history and exploring the masters.
I am newer at expressing myself and finding my style but what I can tell you I have found is JOY. Painting brings me so much joy. It allows me to let my soul sing and when I hang one of my own pieces on the wall… WOW!!! it makes a statement and grabs attention.
It is much different that the old wall decor I used to hang. This is true for both my own paintings but even more so for the paintings we’ve bought over the years. The artist is speaking to us sharing a bit of their soul. It also tells a story of us and where we were in our lives when we bought the paice.
Sometimes it was when on vacation in Amsterdam, in Mexico, at an art show, or maybe just finding a wonderful local artist together while sipping coffees at a local shop where an artist was hung. This type art creates a connection with your soul. It hits different than something we pick up at IKEA.
Why Mindful Collectors Choose Art
Mindful collectors often describe being drawn to a painting not because it matches their curtains, but because it moves them. It sparks a memory. It shifts their energy. It makes them breathe deeper.
If you’re someone who appreciates bold colors, texture, and spontaneity, you’re likely not just decorating—you’re curating a life that reflects your essence.
Buying original art is a personal decision, and one that grows more meaningful with time. You’re investing in more than a product… you’re investing in a relationship with beauty, emotion, and authenticity.
Your home soon (over time, really) becomes your own personal wellness gallery of joy. It is a beautiful thing that a well curated space just feels nice. Although happiness comes from within creating a nice calming space for yourself to just BE, can help with your energy. I guess this aligns with the idea behind Feng Shui and the energy of the room.

Why I Paint for People Like You
As an artist, I don’t just create to fill a space… I create to awaken something in you. My paintings are bold, expressive, and layered with vibrant color and movement. They come from a place of curiosity, emotion, mindfulness, and love.
If I am being honest, it feels really good when someone connects with a certain piece and they buy it and I know they will love it. I’ve had a few pieces that I loved that was hard to let go of but knowing the art was going to a loving home and it would bring someone else joy makes it easy to let go of.
Art is first for my own walk, healing, curiosity, excitement, and joy. Then maybe some of this energy carries over for the new owner.
Each piece I paint carries its own energy. I often hear from collectors that my work brings them peace, inspiration, or even a sense of freedom. WOW!!! That’s the power of art… it resonates beyond the canvas.
If you’ve been searching for something that speaks to your soul… not just your color scheme, you might be ready to move beyond decor and into the world of living with real art. Mine or another artists’.
Final Thoughts: Buy What Moves You
In the end, the right choice isn’t about what’s trendy or what your neighbors will like… it’s about you. If something stirs your heart, stops you in your tracks, or makes you feel more connected to yourself or your space or other humans… that’s not decor. That’s ART!
And that moment of connection?
That’s priceless.
That’s the difference between fine art and wall decor.
You can still shop for color and size BUT seeing something that creates an emotional wave of something (joy, laughter, happiness, connectedness, inspiration, or even a way to process grief, healing, or sadness), That creates an experience and a stirring in your heart.
I can get behind selling that kind of art but I no longer go door-to-door but try to get my art in front of people like you that might be moved by what I am creating. I thank you for following me and if you ever feel moved by one of my pieces… reach out and let’s have a conversation it might be perfect for you, your life, and your home or office. 🙂
